Microdermabrasion crystals are the key ingredient in the process responsible for skin exfoliation. There are several different types available but the most commonly used ones are aluminum oxide. They are used to strip away the dead top layers of the epidermis and accelerate rejuvenation.

Aluminum oxide is found underground. It is a hard metal compound, strong enough to be blasted out of a machine onto the surface of the skin without disintegrating. It also is light and abrasive, two qualities which make it very suitable for this procedure.

The process used to purify aluminum oxide is extensive. It is melted and recrystallized as many as eight times to make sure that it is pure. Even so, slight amounts of other materials like silica can remain. It needs to be as pure as possible to be considered for dermatological use.

The size of the crystal used is important too. The smaller the grit size, the gentler the procedure. Sensitive skins may require a smaller grit size than those which are not so sensitive. The usual size used is about 100-120 microns.

Aluminum oxide is non toxic and does not have any chemical interaction with the skin. This means that it does not cause allergic or adverse reactions. It actually has anti-bacterial properties which can help in the treatment of acne.

Aluminum oxide is cheap in price and can be ordered from many internet stores. Products are packed in containers according to size and quality. Some companies sell large quantities to clinics all over the world. However, some do offer products in small quantities for purchase by those wanting to use them for home exfoliation.

It is advisable to consult a dermatologist or esthetician about your skin. They can give you advice about the best treatment available for you after evaluating your skin according to its type, sensitivity and severity of your problem. Some conditions are well suited to microdermabrasion such as mild acne, fine lines and sallow or dull skin. As this treatment only works on the upper layer, more severe conditions such as deep scarring require other treatments.

The machines used for the microderm procedures have several functions. They pull and raise a small section of skin to work on, creating some swelling and bringing impurities to the surface. A stream of tiny crystals is shot across the targeted patch of skin. Dead skin cells and used product are sucked up for disposal.

This treatment is low risk and there is rapid recovery afterwards. Side effects are minimal, including skin tightness, redness, sensitivity and minor bruising. The only real risk involved is inhalation which can cause respiratory problems, itchy eyes and throat as well as headaches. If the procedure is done by a trained professional, care is taken not to expose the patient to any inhalation.

Treatment with microdermabrasion crystals can be very effective. It can lessen signs of aging, leaving skin looking younger and feeling smoother. Dead skin cells are removed, rejuvenation is accelerated and topical medications may be absorbed more easily due to greater permeability. Treatment needs to be done more than once to be most effective.
